More men than ever before are taking control of their appearance. Global sales for men’s grooming and personal care products is expected to surpass $60B by 2020.

But do men really need to invest time and money into skin care? The answer is absolutely!

Skin care is not just for women. Everyone needs to practice good habits to keep skin supple and youthful. Here are seven of the best skin care tips for men.

1. Establish a Regular Skin Care Routine

Men’s skin needs more than a quick splash of water every morning followed by a shave. Your skin needs to be cleansed every morning and night and after sweaty workouts, followed by moisturizing.

Skip the drying bar of soap for a gentle facial cleanser formulated for men (they’re less likely to contain feminine smelling fragrances and unnecessary ingredients.) Rinse well with warm water. Hot water can dry out the skin.

It may help to determine what your skin type is-whether it’s oily, normal, or dry-when choosing skin care products. Try to use one formulated for your skin type or that’s suitable for all.

If you have facial hair, you may want to try a beard shampoo or soap. These products not only soften your beard, but they’ll help keep the skin underneath nourished and soft.

Pat your face dry and while the skin is still damp, apply a facial moisturizer to help lock in water so it can hydrate the skin. If aging and wrinkles are a concern, you may want to invest in an anti-aging serum specially formulated to soften lines.

2. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

To prevent premature aging and leathery skin, it’s vital to use a good full-spectrum sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to apply to every exposed part including your nose, ears, chest, and head if you’ve experienced hair loss. Sunscreen is necessary during the winter as well, as the snow can reflect rays onto you.

Today’s sunscreen choices are available in lotion, stick, or even powder formats, so you’re sure to find a formula that’s easy to apply and feels comfortable on the skin. A good pair of sunglasses will not only help protect your eyes and the eye area, but will make you look cool as well.

A wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective clothing should be a part of your wardrobe. They’re great for those outdoor activities when you need a little more shelter from the sun.

3. Use the Right Razor

Disposable razors may be affordable and disposable, but their multiple blades can often wreck havoc on men’s skin, causing bumps and razor rash. If this keeps happening to you, you may want to give a single blade straight razor or rechargeable model a try.

Using a straight razor takes some practice, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it. The blades are also affordable and can save you money in the long run over buying disposable razors. You can also treat yourself to a professional barber shave once in a while.

A good shaving cream can also protect against razor burn and nicks while keeping skin soft. You’ll also want to follow your shave with a soothing cream or moisturizer.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is essential for skin health. Your skin cells contain water and not getting enough hydration will make skin look dry and flaky.

Water can help skin glow and may even lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Drinking eight glasses a day is still the recommended intake amount for adults.

You may also want to cut down on your caffeine an alcohol consumption as both are very dehydrating. Drinking water along with these beverages can help counteract their dehydrating effects.

5. Eat a Balanced Diet

Along with drinking enough water, a healthy balanced diet certainly contributes to your skin’s overall health. Make sure to get enough daily servings of fruit and vegetables, as they contain anti-oxidants that can fight free radicals and skin damage.

You may also want to skip the daily doughnut or other sweet treat or at least cut down on your sugar consumption. There’s also mounting evidence that sugar contributes to inflammation and can actually stick to collagen, making skin less supple.

Added sweeteners are sneaky and can be found in yogurt, condiments, cereals, and other foods that we wouldn’t consider “unhealthy.” Check food labels for the sugar content in grams. The American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more than 37.5 grams (the equivalent of nine teaspoons) of sugar daily.

6. Get Enough Sleep

When we don’t get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night, the body actually experiences hormonal disruptions that can affect our skin. It also causes circulation to slow down, meaning blood isn’t reaching every part of our body as quickly as it should. This can make our skin look pale.

There’s a reason why they call it beauty sleep, and it doesn’t apply just to women. Getting enough sleep helps prevent dark under eye circles and gives skin a healthy glow.

7. Stop or Cut Down on Smoking

Smoking can slow down circulation just as not enough sleep can. This can make your skin paler than it should.

It’s also no secret that smoking can cause signs of premature aging on the skin and lips. It’s better for your overall health not to smoke, so try to kick the habit to keep yourself healthy inside and out!
