With songs like “Forever Young” and pop culture pushing that anyone over 30 is “old”, it’s no wonder that 41% of womensay they wish they looked younger. As we age, our bodies and organs age with us. And what’s the largest and most visible organ in the body?

Our skin. So it’s no wonder our skin is the first place you can spot signs of aging, whether that’s wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, and sagging.

If you want to reduce these signs of aging, you don’t have to run to the dermatologist and get an expensive treatment that involves needles or scary chemicals. There are things you can do at home to reverse aging and give your skin a youthful boost.

Keep reading to learn 5 of our favorites!

1. Your Diet

The food we eat fuels our cells to work properly. So imagine you’re eating junk food, food with nasty preservatives, and food with little to no nutritional value. It makes sense that those types of foods aren’t going to give your cells everything they need to work properly and for you to look your best.

Now imagine you’re eating a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients. Doesn’t it make sense that those foods help your cells work better and, in turn, make you feel and look younger and healthier?

Let’s look at some specific types of foods that will help you reverse aging.

Foods High in Antioxidants

One of the main causes of aging and age-related skin conditions (like wrinkles and age spots, for example) has to do with cellular damage.

UV rays, environmental factors, and damaged cell components can lead to the formation of dangerous free radicals. These free radicals cause oxidative damage, which means they damage our DNA and our cells.

This type of damage can lead to cell death, wrinkling, sagging, discoloration, and even serious disorders like cancer.

Antioxidants are nutrients that help to minimize and/or block oxidative damage. They can neutralize the damaging free radicals, and even improve the appearance of damaged/aging skin.

Some of the best antioxidant-rich foods include:

  • Berries (blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc)
  • Beans
  • Apples
  • Nuts (pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts, in particular)
  • Dark chocolate
  • Artichokes
  • Spinach

Try adding these foods to your diet to get a super-dose of antioxidant power.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that are linked to healthy heart function, blood flow regulation, and inflammatory responses. Studies show that omega-3s can help us reduce abnormal/harmful inflammation, which can help our skin look younger and healthier.

Increase your intake of fish (mackerel, sardines, herring, salmon, etc), chia seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, and soybeans to get some extra omega-3s. You can also take supplements like fish oil.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a compound very similar to antioxidants. Numerous studies show that both consuming resveratrol and using topical resveratrol treatments can produce anti-aging results in the skin.

You can find resveratrol in berries, peanuts, grapes, and dark chocolate. Perhaps most excitingly, it’s found in both red and white wine. So kick your feet up, throw on a face mask (more on this later!) and feel good about having a glass or two of wine!

2. Natural Oils

Natural oils help keep your skin moisturized without harsh chemicals found in certain skincare products. Try some of the following:

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is high in antioxidants and lauric acid, both of which can help hydrate the skin and prompt cell regeneration. This can tighten up sagging skin/wrinkles and give your skin a healthy glow that you haven’t had since your 20s.

Jojoba Oil

This is an essential oil that contains high concentrations of vitamin B complexes, vitamin E, antioxidants, and silicon. Each of these components has been shown to help aging skin regenerate collagen (which can help tighten and strengthen skin) while also hydrating.

3. Lemon Juice

If you’re concerned with dark age spots or areas with discoloration, try spot treating those areas with lemon juice. The strong concentration of vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant) combined with the acidic properties will work to lighten dark age spots.

4. Homemade Face Masks

Face masks from the store aren’t always reliable: they can contain harsh chemicals and fillers that do nothing for your skin. Try making your own at home with natural ingredients that can reverse aging.

Papaya Face Mask

Papaya is rich in vitamin A, which is a nutrient that can help tighten and improve the firmness of your skin. It also contains papain, an enzyme that can improve skin discoloration, boost skin softness, and combat free radical damage.

Simply buy a ripe papaya, mash the flesh of the fruit into a paste, and apply to your face (or the area of concern!). Leave it for around 20 minutes before washing off with warm water.

Avocado & Honey Face Mask

Avocado contains healthy fats that work to moisturize your skin, while honey works to lock that moisture into your skin. Avocado also contains vitamin E that can help even out your skin coloring.

Mix half an avocado with a dollop of honey until it’s in a spreadable texture. As with the papaya mask, leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing it off.

5. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Tip #5 goes along with what we spoke about in #1: keeping your body healthy will directly affect your skin. This means exercising, getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and protecting your skin.

Avoid sun exposure for too long without wearing sunscreen, as this can worsen signs of again you already have while also aging your skin further.

Getting enough sleep is important since sleep helps your cells rest and regenerate, which can help you look rested and younger. Exercise is similar to sleep: getting your blood pumping cycles nutrients to all of your skin cells, which can help with skin health.

In a nutshell, telomerase stops your cells from ageing and can reverse ageing. If your skin cells don’t age or indeed get younger they will behave like younger skin. Younger skin produces collagen, elastin and has an abundance of hyaluronic acid. It doesn’t wrinkle with usage, isn’t prone to pigmentation or ‘age spots’ and has a much more even tone than aged skin.
