With the rise of Instagram and Pinterest, it seems like we’re hearing more and more about skin care routines. Celebrities are coming out with skin care lines, and influencers are posting about their beauty routines daily. With all this input, it can be easy to get into a skin care routine that stresses you more than it blesses you.

And to make things more of a struggle bus, there are some people out there who just have flawless skin without doing hardly anything. In reality, good skin is more about your lifestyle and genetics and less about using everything Ulta sells. Read on to learn how to figure out which skin care products you should actually be using.

Evaluating if Your Skin Care Routine Is Working for You

It can be hard to know if all the products you’re using are doing what they’re supposed to or just making matters worse. Many of us may have multiple products we’re applying, so even if there is a problem, it can be hard to know what’s causing the issue. One good place to start is to pick a weekend when you can spend time at home and lay off your entire beauty routine for a day or two.

Once you’ve given your skin a chance to return to its natural state, start testing your beauty products out one at a time. You should be able to see specific results with each one – in some cases, immediately. If you notice your skin feeling or looking worse after using a product, ditch it.

Are You Using Too Many Skin Care Products?

With the sheer number of skin care products on the market, many of us can find ourselves using way too many. Serums, moisturizers, exfoliators, cleansers, creams, masks, and more – we get lost in the forest of small, colorful things that promise to make us beautiful. So how many is too many?

One good first thing to look for is if any of your skin care products are interacting badly with one another. Vitamin C cancels out retinol, and certain combinations of products can leave your skin feeling greasy and gross. You should also remove any elements of your skin care routine that don’t serve a specific, known purpose.

Why Beauty Products Don’t Always Work

So what gives? We all buy these products that make pie-in-the-sky promises. They’ll make our skin clear, dewy, free of oil but not dry, glowing but not shiny – so why don’t they?

Part of the reason skin care products don’t do what they claim is that there is very little scientific research to back up their claims. After all, the NIH has better things to look into than whether Sephora’s latest serum actually reduces pore size. But another part of the problem is we’re willing to believe what they tell us – we want the beautiful, airbrushed skin, so we try any number of beauty products to get it.

Causes of Aging

As much as we don’t like to think about it, aging is the slow deterioration of our body’s structure and function. The things that are supposed to keep our skin firm break down, the pigment that colors our hair fades, and we begin to show physical signs that we are inching closer to the inevitable.

But some people never seem to go through a change. We all know those people who look just the same today as they did twenty years ago. In large part, this can be chalked up to genetics; certain people have better regenerative properties baked into their cells.

There are also some environmental factors that can lead to increased aging. Most of us know that sun damage can give us premature wrinkles, as can smoking. Stress can also show physical tells on the body in the form of premature gray hairs.

What Are Telomeres?

When it comes to skin aging, it seems some people got the genetic jackpot. So what is it in their genes that keeps them looking dewy fresh for decades? In essence, they’re a protective cap on the end of our chromosomes that protect our DNA.

The connection between stronger telomeres and less aging makes perfect sense. Skin is one of the fastest-regenerating organs in the body, with skin on your face turning over every twenty-eight days. So the better your body can reproduce your DNA, the better your skin will regenerate, and the younger you’ll look.

Where Does Collagen Play In?

If you’ve done any reading about anti-aging skin care products, you’ve almost certainly heard about collagen. Collagen is a protein that forms trellises and structures which give skin strength and elasticity. There are about sixteen different types of collagen, and some of them are pound-for-pound stronger than steel.

As we age, the collagen structures in our skin start to break down, which is what causes wrinkles. There are a lot of creams that will claim to contain collagen, but the protein is too large to be absorbed through the skin, so they don’t have any specific collagen-related benefit. If you want to prevent collagen loss, eat a healthful diet that includes things like eggs, berries, meat, peppers, and broccoli.

Finding the Best Skin Care Routine

Your skin care routine should be customized to your skin and your needs specifically. No two people are alike, so the same routine won’t work for everyone. Focus on specific things you want to work on with your skin, and base your beauty routine off that.

Finding a good cleanser that works well for your skin is a great first step. From there, if you want to invest in serum and eye cream, those can be helpful as well. And make sure you get a moisturizer with a good SPF to prevent sun damage.
