Reverse Aging: 9 Life Habits That Will Reduce Aging

It’s the beginning of a brand new year, and if you have resolved to work towards a new (and improved!) you, congratulations! There has never been a better time to tackle self-improvement. Whether you want to reduce stress, learn a new skill, boost your self-esteem, lose some weight, or reduce or even reverse aging, there are loads of valuable resources at your fingertips.

Today we’d like to talk about the aging process, and how you can slow the hands of time. Maybe you can’t stop your children from growing up or the calendar year from advancing, but you can affect the impact of aging on your skin! Read on to learn about nine habits to change for a better you in 2019 and beyond!

Nine Habits That Will Reverse Aging

Remember when you were in your teens and 20s? You could pull all-nighters with hardly a yawn, eat like a linebacker and never gain weight, and bounce back quickly after any party, no matter how debauched? As we grow older, we realize just how good we had it back then!

It’s simply a fact of life that as the years pass, our metabolism slows. It’s easier to gain weight, harder to build muscles, and we get tired just thinking about all the tasks we have to handle tomorrow, let alone actually tackling them. Well, we’re here to tell you that all hope is not lost. Without further ado, nine ways to fight back against the passage of time.

1. Just Say No To Stress

Our culture rewards hustle and bustle. The busier we are, the better. Have you noticed the recent emphasis on finding time for self-care? We need that reminder, even the permission, to slow down and stop trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Of course, it’s not possible to live a stress-free life. But make this your year to just say no when you’re asked to do more than you want to. Not more than you can — more than you want to. Spend more time pursuing meaningful activities or just doing nothing at all in the company of your favorite people. You’ll feel younger for it!

2. Take Care of Your Body with Nutrition

You don’t have to craft 13-ingredient buddha bowls that are too pretty to eat, or only choose food based on its Instagrammability. Just do a little better. In the iconic words of Michael Pollan, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

If eating keto makes you feel good, great. If vegan = bliss for you, that’s super. It matters less what diet you follow and more that you listen to your body — and maybe cut back on that guilty pleasure. You know the one.

3. Hydrate

No one drinks enough water. OK, maybe Gwyneth Paltrow does, but most of us would do well to imbibe a bit more H20 each day.

One easy way to get your fill? Invest in beautiful reusable bottles. Fill up two liters’ worth for each day and stash them in the fridge. Add fruit or cucumbers if that makes it easier for you to drink water.

4. Work Up a Sweat

This is another no-brainer way to reverse aging. You know how important exercise is for your health and your future. If you haven’t yet found your workout bliss, this is your year.

The best advice for getting your sweat on and sticking to it? Find a workout that you enjoy. Slogging on the treadmill or forcing yourself to hit the gym when you hate it is only going to add to your stress level. So do Zumba, practice yoga, walk through the park, take up roller derby, or host epic dance parties in the living room.

5. Stop Smoking

You. Yes, you, with the hangdog expression on your face. You hate the fact that you’re a closet smoker, don’t you? It’s draining your checking account, it makes you smell terrible, and it’s killing you slowly.

We don’t need to tell you any of the many reasons to stop smoking; sadly, we can’t tell you how to do it, either. But we can tell you that making this change is the single best action you can take for your health. So do it already.

6. Seek the Shade

What if we told you that one very simple action could prevent or reverse aging by up to 80%? You’d take that action, wouldn’t you? Of course you would.

It feels great when the sun’s warmth hits your face, sure. But be smart about it. Limit your exposure to UV rays. Wear protective clothing, use sunblock, or stay out of the sun except for very short periods.

7. Get Your ZZZs

Shakespeare knew what was up when he wrote the immortal line about sleep, and how it knits the raveled sleeve of care. Getting good sleep, the REM kind, can also help reknit the raveled cells in your body.

Depriving yourself of adequate shuteye is going to amp up your stress, lower your immune system, slow your metabolism, and make you much more vulnerable to a whole host of illnesses, diseases, and even accidents.

Only you know how much sleep helps you function best, but it’s likely somewhere between seven and nine hours.

8. Learn Something New

Remember how your Grandma used to do crossword puzzles? Turns out she was onto something. Learning new things, using your brain to solve puzzles, or challenging yourself mentally or intellectually is one of the best ways to stay young at heart (and mind!).

The good news is that it doesn’t much matter what you learn. So take up sudoku or scuba diving, teach yourself to sew or to make fermented foods, or just keep reading interesting books to get that ol’ gray matter moving.

9. All You Need Is Love

At the risk of sounding like hippies, you could reduce stress and reverse aging if you’d only love one another right now. Studies show that close relationships — and that means platonic as well as romantic — lower levels of cortisol, help our bodies heal better, and can literally add years to our life.

So go hug your honey, your kids, or your BFF. You can thank us later — much later, as a matter of fact!
